GOODWILL HAS SETTLED IN YOUR HEART

One day, desiring to improve myself further, I asked a wise being how to do it. His reply was, “Make your mind so malleable that you fly in the air and swim in the ocean like a dragon, without resistance.”.

When friction in the mind over what is happening is relinquished, everything becomes simple. Tensions get released, quarrels are not started, hard speech is not uttered, grunges do not arise, and resentment does not shrink the heart. No tight belly, no tunnel vision, no rounded shoulders, no burning stomach. You sleep well and are at ease. There is clarity all the time, whatever the situation is.

How do I do that? You learn to know your mind first in meditation. You learn to know what its activities are. Then, you learn to replace unwholesome mental qualities with wholesome ones with persistence and perseverance in daily activities. After a while, it becomes easier since you witness through direct experience the benefits of that kind of action in comparison with the damages caused by hatred and ill-will. And this, for yourself and for others. It has an effect on your surroundings, your relatives, your pets, and the energy of your environment. At some point, it becomes effortless to do the replacement. Later on, you don’t even let the bad seeds arise until it is finally totally abandoned.

Goodwill has settled in your heart. You feel at ease and undisturbed.

You can fly and swim imperturbably.

The recipe is very simple. Recognize when resistance to a situation arises, inquire about the reason for it, and replace it. The reasons are not that numerous. They all have the same face. It is clinging to sense objects that we want to keep or get rid of. We want to become someone that we are not yet, or we want to get rid of something we don’t like about ourselves or others.
We have the tendency to cling to views. We see them as mine, like a dear property. We are right; they are wrong. We are attached to our opinions, worldviews, and meanings we add to things and circumstances. We like to latch on them since they shape us up. We are afraid to become nothing, unimportant, useless, and uninteresting if we let them go. We are afraid to be invisible, annihilated. This is the primal fear of death.

Anything that is clung to as “me, mine, myself” will cause problems. “How can we function in this world without them?” , you could retort. That’s the tricky part: by direct experience. Just play around. What happens when you release the grab? How does it feel? Start with small things. Inquire mindfully about the nature of your possessions, your body, the seeming importance of your opinions, and your way of classifying things. Are boundaries that sharp? Is it worth being carried away in endless disagreeable thought patterns? Look closely with wise discernment, again and again.

It takes time and practice. It takes patience. It takes the courage to fail and to start again.

You start by training mindfulness of your mental states, feelings, body, and the constituents of reality. Through the development of awareness and by applying the antidotes, you become able to react skillfully to any situation with clarity.
